olfactory memory

Tonight as I walked, I found myself in the wake of a cigarette smoker. As he exhaled, a trail of smoke left his lips and drifted into my nostrils.

The presence of the scent in my nostrils instantly triggered a memory in my mind; more precisely, I was reminded of the last time that I was in such close proximity to cigarette smoke.

Two Fridays ago, when I went to Rage in WeHo, I spent a fair amount of time on the patio, making friends and engaging in conversation, as people around me puffed away on their cigarettes.

Being two feet away from that random guy smoking a cigarette at UCI acted as a time machine and brought me back to that night two weeks ago when I was surrounded by a similar scent, but a starkly different environment.

Instantaneous…I just thought it was cool. (But smoking isn’t).
